Olympic Swimmer, Olympic Refuge Foundation Programme Support Officer

Biography

Olympic Swimmer, Olympic Refuge Foundation Programme Support Officer. Sabine was born and raised in Bethlehem, Palestine in 1994. At the age of 1, Sabine had a drowning accident where her family realised the importance of learning how to swim. Growing up under difficult conditions in the early 2000s in Bethlehem did not allow her to practice sports regularly in a free and safe environment. Regardless of the circumstances, Sabine set her Olympic dream shortly after watching the Olympic Games on TV for the first time in 2004. Making it to the Olympic Games while living in a place where clean and warm water was barely accessible made it look impossible, yet she swam her way to her first World Swimming Championships at the age of 13. At age 16, Sabine was offered a scholarship from the Olympic solidarity to swim and study at the High-Performance Sport Centre in San Cugat, Barcelona. She decided to take it and leave everything she knew behind, where she then went on to race in a total of 5 World Championships, 2 Asian Games, Youth Olympic Games, and to cap it off, the 2012 London Olympic Games. Sabine believes that swimming is an essential life skill that goes way beyond racing. After her retirement, Sabine finished her master’s in Sport Management at the Johan Cruyff Institute in Barcelona and worked for the Spanish Olympic Water Polo Team and later World Aquatics. She is currently working with the Olympic Refuge Foundation in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she is helping with the implementation of the ORF Programmes across various countries to insure young people affected by displacement thrive through sport.
